English winter lessons

October 20th, 2009 § 0

Last year, I was learning english thanks to the lessons I received two days a week until last june. This month I started the same system to improve my english, thinking, actually and in deep, in the defense of my doctoral thesis. So, despite the fact that I am very busy with my work and my lessons at the University, I know that  if I want to obtain the best  mark in the defense of my research then I need dominate the Shakespeare´s language.

During today´s lessons, I spoke about the summer and, in general, about my doctoral thesis so, the following days I will speak about the others specific issues one to one.

Please, give me good luck!

A shameful news

September 24th, 2009 § 0

Reading elmundo.es in its today edition, I found a report which supposes for our, the spanish people, a shame.

I can say this statement because, in opinion of this online newspaper, Spain in one of the European Union countries with a worse knowledge of  a foreing language.

Specifically, the opinion poll by Eurostat about this issue, shows us that Spain with Portugal and Hungary are the leading countries in a shameful opinion poll.

The research establishes that, in those countries, there are not many adult people able to speak another foreing language.

If the european average is 35,7%, in Spain it is 46,6%, in Portugal it is 51,3 % and in Hungary it is 74,8 %.

This ought to oblige us to think about learning english and other languages during the obligatory courses in the schools. In fact, in Spain only 28,3%students are studying two languages while in other countries, as France, Holland or Finland, the percentage goes up to 90%.

A Christmas Carol

September 21st, 2009 § 0

Vaughan Systems has published a serie of audio-books very interesting to learn english. The pack is formed by four audio-books.

I have purchased two of them: A Christmas Carol and Tales of Casanovas´s Memoirs. Both are fantastic tools to improve the english vocabulary, listening and the pronunciation in english.

My favourite one is, righ now, A Christmas Carol, because the story is so nice, wonderful, full of good intentions and full of important morals of a fable. But on the other hand, this story is too easy to read and understand if you know a bit of english language.

The another one, in my opinion, is more interesting in relation to the vocabulary because this story is more extense and complex and it can give us new concepts and new english words to complete our english vocabulary.

Let´s play with the english language

September 21st, 2009 § 0

This blog is created as a tool to improve our english and to show you different ways to get this objective.

One of my favourite plays which you can copy and practice with your friends consists on the following: the players ought to write three things about theirselfs and only one of them ought to be true and the others players have to guess it. The way to know the true is asking questions whose answers can be “yes” or “not”.

Try it!

Just a story about english language: The United States and Greit Britain, two countries separated by the same language

September 13th, 2009 § 0

“USA and Greit Britain: two countries separated by the same language”. I am quoting the words of a special man: John, the farmer. One of the best “anglos” in my Vaughan experience this summer.

During our one-to-one, he used to speak about interesting things and one of them is the following story, “some what“:

One year, at Chritsmas time, The Washington Post phoned to the English Ambassador to ask him what he wants for Chritsmas. The Ambassador said that the question was inappropriate and rejected any present from the american newspaper.

The Washington Post tried it  many times more and, finally, the English Ambassador told him: ” I only want a little box of chocolates”.

A few days after the petition, The Washington Post published the following:

” The French Ambassador wants the world peace, the German Ambassador wants the end of the world hunger, the Italian Ambassador wants the end of the wars and, the English one wants a little box of chocolates”

It shows like the language is a difficult subject, inclusive, for people who use the same… so, for me, it´s very complicated or complex but I won´t lose hope to dominate it.

Where Am I?
